How we came together

Our Team’s Story

Make no mistake: money wasn’t what brought this team together. We enjoy business, and we like to make a profit. Our roots are in friendship, the show circuit and decades of building products. Many of those relationships grew because someone stepped in when help was needed. Everyone here has a purpose—and moves with purpose.

One of Jack’s earliest lessons came from Tony Bennett in LaPlace. At 14, Jack learned window tinting in Tony’s dirt-floor shop—and still laughs about how the finished tint stayed clean. Jack wanted tinted windows but couldn’t afford to pay for the installation. Tony taught him the basics, sold him film and encouraged him to give the work a shot. The job came out well, Tony was impressed, and their conversations soon turned to car audio. Tony’s audio store and sign shop kept them connected through different projects over the years, including Jack’s signs and banners. That practical help gave Jack a way forward when money was tight. Today the relationship continues through printing and branded gear for Orion Industries.

Drivesoft

Jack Cali

Product development, electronics and vehicle integration

Jack Cali leads Drivesoft’s product development, bringing practical car-audio and vehicle-installation experience to electronics, software and integrated controls. His work connects the circuit board, enclosure, wiring and user interface to the finished vehicle.

From early in-car computing systems featured on MTV’s Pimp My Ride to limousine controls, surveillance systems, school-bus stop-arm systems and wheelchair locking solutions, Jack has developed products for a wide range of vehicle applications. His current work includes Orion amplifiers, equalizers and crossovers, alongside Drivesoft switching, lighting, siren and mobility systems. He follows projects from the first concept through fabrication and installation, with attention to how the complete system works and can be serviced.

His manufacturing experience also grew outside car audio. While running his audio store, Jack developed water filters in his spare time, learning filtration stages with raw GAC carbon and carbon blocks. His first filter injection mold in 1999 introduced him to designing around the molding process. He later used deep-drawing tools to make a stainless-steel filter cover with etched names and logos. Needing material cut for that project brought him into Troy Tillinghast’s shop and began their fabrication relationship.

“Like Prince, I’ve got my team of artists—but I still play every instrument. Purple is intentional. We create at the highest frequency.”

Limousine installation and service

Nelson Murphy

12-volt installation and repair support · Las Vegas

Nelson Murphy is part of Drivesoft’s limousine installation and repair support team for Las Vegas clients, including Bell Transportation and Presidential Limousine. He brings hands-on vehicle installation and service experience developed through car audio and 12-volt electrical work.

A longtime friend and early installation mentor to Jack Cali, Nelson taught many of the wiring techniques behind Jack’s first vehicle projects. Their shared shop experience included starter-interruption circuits, door-lock triggers and early custom remote-start installations.

Early shop days

How Nelson and Jack connected

  • The ambitious truck build: Jack first arrived at New Orleans Auto Sound as a customer planning a system with ten 12-inch Savard subwoofers. The plan was a “walk-through” conversion connecting the truck cab and bed, with a rubber boot and truck cap. Nelson agreed to tackle the installation, and the two became friends.
  • Learning the 12-volt trade: Working together in 1989 and 1990, Nelson taught Jack early car-audio wiring, starter-kill circuits, door-lock activation and custom remote-start techniques. Some of those early experiments even involved manual-transmission vehicles.
  • The Porsche-door-panel incident: Jack remembers accidentally running over an expensive Porsche door panel belonging to one of Nelson’s customers. In Jack’s retelling, that was their cue to roll Nelson’s Snap-on toolbox out and pursue their own ventures—a less glamorous chapter of the shop story.
  • Working together again: After about a year and a half working at New Orleans Auto Sound, Jack bought the store and brought Nelson back. They worked together again before Nelson pursued larger opportunities in other states. Nelson’s early career also included work at Mobile One.

Mike K. has been Jack Cali’s friend and business associate since 2002. His development experience spans major programming languages, software platforms and application environments.

Mike was Jack’s software wingman as the early LiteStep implementation created with Chad Morrison evolved through Visual Basic, C/C++ and .NET. He went on to work almost exclusively on Drivesoft, developing AM/FM, TV and XM tuner controls, navigation integration, LED lighting patterns and shows, music playlists and playback tracking.

His work also includes server software for RidePay’s New Orleans taxi payment system and applications for assistive-technology products and school-bus citation cameras. Today, he works with Jack and Mitch S. on software and platform development, including the data groundwork for Drivesoft AI. His siblings also develop for Drivesoft and other companies.

Extensive background

Mike’s development highlights

  • Competition software: Jack and Mike’s first major software project together was a car-audio competition database for USACI, part of Jack’s Vehicle Show Office Management Systems (VSOMS). Jack developed the system; Mike wrote the database and server-side software.
  • Connected products: Mike integrated third-party products through their APIs and SDKs, bringing their functions into Drivesoft’s computer-based vehicle platform.
  • From satellites to the dashboard: Jack and Mike worked side by side with XM developers and engineers on satellite tuners and software integration. Their satellite-media projects covered XM audio, stock-market information, Cartoon Network programming and other data feeds, using compact antenna hardware to bring those capabilities into the vehicle.
  • Early navigation and connected media: Jack and Mike worked with navigation technologies and data from Tele Atlas and NAVTEQ, integrating GPS with MP3 and DVD playback, email and Internet access in Drivesoft’s vehicle platform. Their work brought these computing functions together in the dashboard during the early 2000s.
  • Vehicle controls: In 2006, the software communicated over RS-232 with a single Drivesoft controller box. That connection helped expand the existing car-audio multimedia package into limousine controls.
  • Camera applications and plate recognition: Mike helped develop software for school-bus citation cameras, integrating the team’s own recognition code and OCR with high-performance video hardware adapted for vehicle use. His application work also extends to assistive-technology products.
  • School-bus data and backend systems: Mike helped develop the data flows and server software for real-time uploads over Verizon’s cellular network, supporting camera systems that monitored children and surrounding traffic. At one stage, the team’s systems operated on more than 3,000 school buses, including deployments in Dallas–Fort Worth.
  • Full Windows multimedia: Working with Jack, Mike integrated software with the head units the team was building around Intel motherboards. Their double-DIN systems brought a full Windows platform to the dashboard, with early media libraries supporting up to 1,000 songs and 500 videos.
